Police nab three car snatchers
Tema, Feb. 12, GNA - A three-member car snatching syndicate operating in the Ningo-Prampram District have been arrested by the Tema Police Command.The three suspects are Emmanuel Maxwell Nartey, 26- year-old phone repairer, Felix Agyei, also 26 years and phone repairer and Mohamed Issifu alias Akorkora,40, a car dealer.Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Olivia Turkson, Public Relations Officer of the Tema Police, told the media that between January 12 and February 08, Nartey and Agyei snatched three Nissan Almera saloon taxis from their drivers and stole a Nissan Sentra saloon car belonging to Nartey’s uncle.ASP Turkson said after snatching the cars, Nartey and Agyei then sold the cars to Issifu, who they said was noted for buying stolen cars.She stated that on February 08, at about 00:30 hours, the two embarked on one of their nefarious missions by hiring a taxi from Madina to Central University College at Miotso in the Ningo-Prampram District.She said upon reaching the entrance of the College, they pulled a cutlass on the driver, snatched the car from him and drove towards Ada.The driver, she indicated, managed to go to Tsopoli Police and reported the incident. The Police sent radio message to all the police stations and barriers in the country to watch out for the vehicle.ASP Turkson stated that the taxi was later intercepted at Sogakope Police Barrier in the Volta Region, where the two suspects were apprehended and handed over to the Prampram Police.She said upon interrogation, Nartey and Agyei confessed to their involvement in other car snatching incidents on January 30, and February 05.She again stated that the two suspects also disclosed selling some of the taxis to Issifu at Abotoase in the Volta Region.The Tema Police PRO said Nartey told the Police that he asked his friend Agyei to help him snatch cars to enable him make enough money to travel to Spain.In another development, on February 11, the Tema Patrol Team arrested Ibrahim Issah, a 24-year-old Nigerien scrap dealer, on the motorway for possessing a locally manufactured gun.ASP Turkson said at about 03:00 hours, the patrol team spotted Issah emerging from a bush near the Accra-Tema motorway looking suspicious.Issah, who took to his heels when ordered by the patrol team to stop, was chased and apprehended.A search on him revealed one locally manufactured gun, one live cartridge, a lighter, a cigarette box and a number of matches.GNA
