Ex-President J.A. Kufuor
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called on Ghanaians to support and vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in the upcoming general election.
He indicated that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership is essential for steering Ghana into a future defined by digitalisation and economic transformation.
In a televised interview, Mr. Kufuor described Dr. Bawumia as a visionary leader with a strong grasp of the global digital economy, which he identified as the cornerstone of modern development.
He stressed the importance of electing a leader who understands the evolving global landscape and is equipped to position Ghana for sustained growth.
The former President recounted his first encounter with Dr. Bawumia in 2003, during a conference in London, where the then-young economist delivered a brilliant presentation that left a lasting impression.
Former President Kufuor noted that Dr. Bawumia had consistently demonstrated his intellectual prowess and leadership abilities, making him the ideal candidate to tackle Ghana’s economic challenges.
He highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s contributions during his presidency and credited him with playing a key role in economic management, which helped stabilise the Ghanaian economy.
He cautioned that a vote for anyone else would derail Ghana’s development trajectory.
Former President Kufuor reminisced about the various developmental projects his government initiated, only to be left uncompleted by the succeeding National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, which halted progress on these crucial initiatives.
He mentioned two of the key projects initiated by his administration as the dualisation of the Accra-Kumasi Highway and the affordable housing scheme.
According to him, the Accra-Kumasi highway dualisation project, which aims to reduce vehicular traffic and accidents, has seen significant progress under the current government, with eight local contractors mobilised to construct four major by-passes.
He urged Ghanaians to capitalise on Dr. Bawumia’s experience and innovative approach to governance to ensure continuity and modernise the country.
Mr. Kufuor also reflected on the achievements of his administration, including policies like the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE), Free Maternal Care, and the doubling of cocoa production.
He lamented the setbacks caused by a change in government in 2008, warning against apathy in the upcoming elections.
Former President Kufuor appealed to Ghanaians to vote massively for Dr. Bawumia to sustain and expand the transformative policies initiated by the NPP.
The former President commended Dr. Bawumia’s promise to collaborate closely with traditional leaders if elected, describing it as a reflection of the values Ghanaians hold dear. He called on voters to focus on leadership that will drive national unity and development.
He urged Ghanaians to reject tribalism and divisive politics, advocating for unity and a focus on values, principles, and ideologies.
