The two leading political parties that have had the chance to form government, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have always provided debt-driven development to Ghanains, The Dean of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Law School, Prof Ernest Kofi Abotsi has said.
He makes the observation that debt-driven development has become a race to the bottom by the 2=two leading parties.
Prof Abosti raised concerns against the practice of governments of Ghana to borrow to undertake development projects.
He states that usually, voters forget they they are the ones who will pay for the loans in future yet they applaud governments for debt-driven developments.
Prof Abotsi described borrowing by governments as a lazy approach which must end.
“Debt-driven development has become a race to the bottom by the 2 parties. It is easy! Borrow billions and claim to have built the most infrastructure.
“Voters will reward them without realizing that they the voters bear the pain of future payment. It’s lazy governance & needs to change,” he wrote on his X page.
Prof Abotsi is not the only person expressing this concern.
Similarly, the Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Dr John Kwakye urged Ghanaians to reject leaders who have borrowing mindsets in the upcoming general elections.
He also wrote on his X age that “Ghanaians must reject leaders with a borrowing mindset. We have enough resources here at home. We don’t need to go out and borrow.
“We should accept only leaders prepared to enable Ghana derive maximum benefit from its natural resource wealth.”
