Godfred Yeboah Dame
The maiden edition of the conference for lawyers in the public service is set to kick off tomorrow, Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
The three-day conference, which will run through to November 7, 2024, forms part of the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame’s vision of coordinated and cohesive legal services for State institutions.
The conference will bring together lawyers in state institutions under the theme, ‘Coordinating Legally for an Efficient and Cohesive Public Service’ at the Aldon Ballroom, Kempinski Hotel in Ridge, Accra.
The aim of the conference is to strengthen collaboration among lawyers representing the government and all agencies and corporations in which the government has interests.
President Nana Akufo-Addo is the special guest of honour at the highly anticipated conference, while Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, President of the Ghana Bar Association, professors from universities and other stakeholders in the legal profession are expected to be in attendance.
The objective of the conference is to enhance participants’ expertise in international commercial arbitration and investor-state arbitration, as well as the negotiation, structuring, drafting and review of contracts affecting the State.
Participants would also be trained in arbitration, civil procedure and how to effectively defend the state. This shall be conducted by leading lawyers from around the world, particularly, Ghana, United Kingdom, Mauritius, Canada and Nigeria.
This conference comes at a time when the Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice has seen a considerable facelift in terms of personnel training, retooling in terms of vehicle supply to agencies under the ministry, the completion and utilisation of the 12-storey modern office complex for the Ministry, and a more committed posture in defending the State in litigations.
It also comes at a time when the Office, working together with other Ministries, has achieved resounding victories in defending significant monetary claims against the country, demonstrating the need for continuous training and capacity building in complex legal areas such as arbitration, contract management, and dispute resolution.
President Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 during his State of the Nation Address in Parliament extolled Mr. Dame, for continuing in a very effective manner, the tradition under this administration of contesting every civil litigation against the state, and has avoided the numerous judgement debts that used to be awarded against the State.
The Attorney General later provided evidence showing that he, indeed, saved Ghana from paying over GH¢10 trillion in judgement debts following claims that the President has misinformed the public about the monumental amount involved in the cases.
Mr. Dame disclosed that the figure mentioned by the President was even an understatement because his office had actually saved the country about GH¢15 trillion in judgement debts claimed by various entities against the government.
Document sighted by DAILY GUIDE clearly showed that a company named African Automobile Limited alone instituted a case against the Ministry of Employment and the Attorney General which sought a judgement debt of over GH¢10.3 trillion against the state 2021.
