The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Suhum Constituency of the Eastern Region has suspended two of its officers, Samuel Baah (Gosh), the Constituency Communications Officer, and Alhaji Bala Abubakar, Deputy Nassara Coordinator, for breaching the party’s constitution.
A statement issued by the Constituency Secretary, Stephen Odame, explained that the Constituency Executive Committee (CEC) made the decision at an emergency meeting on August 11, 2024, after reviewing the conduct of the two officers following the Constituency Delegates’ Conference, which elected Frank Asiedu Bekoe as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2024 general elections.
The statement explained that the CEC found that the officers’ conduct was in breach of Article 3(9)(1) and Article 3(5)(a)(2) and (4) of the NPP Constitution, which prohibits members from campaigning publicly and/or declaring support for an independent candidate when the party has sponsored one.
Specifically, the CEC observed that Mr Baah was unhappy with the outcome of the party’s parliamentary election and began advocating for the incumbent MP, Kwodjo Asante to contest as an independent candidate, while the two officers organized processions and presented a petition to the MP to contest against the party’s candidate.
The CEC views these conducts as divisive, anti-party, and misconducts of the highest order, and has therefore suspended the two officers from their positions forthwith.
The decision was made to instil discipline in the party and serve as a deterrent to any member or officer who may want to indulge in anti-party conduct.
“The CEC has called on all members of the party in Suhum to take note of this decision and work towards a resounding victory in the upcoming 2024 elections” the statement noted.
