Goldfields Ghana Foundation has held a medical outreach programme for five communities within the operational area of the mining company in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region.
It was part of the company’s interventions aimed at promoting good health and well being of the people in its host communities.
The medical outreach programme was organized to extend healthcare to the doorsteps of host communities.
In all, about 1800 people, drawn from the Samahu, Abekoase/Tebe, Pepesa and Bompieso communities benefitted from the exercise.
A total of GH¢590,000 was invested in the annual medical outreach in the host communities of the Tarkwa and Damang Mines by the Foundation.
This year, Gold Fields Ghana Foundation partnered five Rotary Clubs- Tarkwa, Kumasi, Kumasi East, Tarkoradi Anaji and Tamale-to screen, treat and provide free medication to participants.
Activities undertaken included health education, breast and prostrate screening, eye test, blood sugar test, blood pressure, and malaria test.
Executive Secretary of Gold Fields Ghana Foundation Abdel-Razak Yakubu, explained that Gold Fields has been organizing the health screening for its host communities annually.
He indicated that the Foundation has also invested $2.9 million in support of health and wellbeing activities since its inception.
Madam Isabella Miakrah Nyamah of the Takoradi-Anaji Rotary Club mentioned that Rotarians always want the best of their communities.
“The health of the members in our communities is paramount to us so we try to support them in the best way we can through community service projects,” she added.
Dr. Charles Yirah Mat, of the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital Emergency Unit, one of the Gold Fields Foundation’s scholarship scheme beneficiaries noted that those with diseases that could not be treated were referred to nearby health facilities.
