THE AMBASSADOR of Ghana to Italy, Merene Botsio Benyah, has called on Ghanaians – both abroad and home – to unite and protect Ghana’s democratic credentials and rally support behind government to realize the country’s aspirations.
Ambassador Benyah was speaking at the celebration of Ghana’s 66th Independence Anniversary in Rome on Tuesday 11th April, 2023 where she appealed to Ghanaians and Africans at large, to pursue a common interest which will inure to the benefit of all.
Not mincing words on the current economic turmoil that the country finds itself in, the Ambassador, in her remarks, explained that a lot of factors have contributed to the country’s economic downturn which seems to have made life unbearable for the citizenry.
However, government was committed in its resolve to introduce measures that would bring relief to the good people of the country in the soonest possible time, she iterated.
She added that but for the intervention of sponsors comprising of some Ghanaian and international organizations, the Mission would not have been able to commemorate the 66th Independence anniversary which came as a strategic way to market and sell Ghana to the people of Italy and the rest of the world.

She said foreign missions abroad representing the people back at home, have a role to play by identifying opportunities back home to attract investors for partnerships which is why the embassy found it necessary to against all odds, use the occasion to showcase the rich Ghanaian culture, and the 1. 3 billion market created on the back of the African Free Trade Continental Agreement (AfCFTA) to drive trade on the continent.
In his response, the Director for Sub- Saharan Africa at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Giuseppe Mistretta, also iterated Italy’s support through a partnership approach to advance cooperation between Italy and Ghana.
He commended Ghana for hosting the AfCFTA Secretariat, describing it as “a game changer” for the continent and the rest of the world.
The event saw some traditional leaders representing Ghana, officials from the diplomatic community, the Ghanaian community in Rome and friends of the Ghana Mission in Italy.
The mission expressed appreciation to the Ghana International Bank, Zeepay, Sienna Services Ltd, EMH Global Ltd, Team Engineering, Flash Box Srl, Showbiz Global Concert, Urepa, Abici, Cartarredo and a host of others for making the event successful.
