Benjamin Kofi Quashie, South African National Democratic Congress Council of Elders Chair and Group Chairman of Allied Consortiums, has thrown his support behind the World Bank’s directive to Ghana regarding an energy plan.
He believes that if Ghana does things right, it could even be an exporter of energy.
He noted that Ghana needs to make a concerted effort to ensure that managers of the economy are able to come up with a policy in line with the World Bank’s policy.
In offering counsel to the government, Quashie argued that Ghana needs to adhere to the directives of the World Bank, since they have a programme with them. He emphasized that this would help Ghana avoid any further energy crisis going forward as a country.
With reference to the ‘dumsor’ debate, the SA NDC Council Chair indicated that this has always been an area where there has been a tug-of-war between his NDC and the NPP about excess capacity. However, he said that what the World Bank is saying is an indictment on the government. That is, there is a looming danger in the energy sector, which Ghana must stop politicizing in order to avert.
Further, he contended that, from the look of things, there is something the government isn’t telling Ghanaians. He queried, “Who is the government fooling by not telling the full story but telling us half-truths?”
In an interview with Joy News, Quashie said Ghanaians should hold the government responsible if anything untoward happens regarding the energy sector.
He claimed that the government only presented to Ghanaians the good side of the policies without telling them the realities.
He concluded by saying that the time has come for Ghana to move away from policies that target the next election and instead make policies that ensure that Ghanaians are ok.
He emphasized that the energy sector policies should be looked at devoid of politics to ensure that Ghana does not go back into ‘dumsor’.
It was his considered view that with Ghana’s ailing economy, if ‘dumsor’ should happen again, then it would be disastrous for the country.
