Decentralization of educational system will bring development – Okyehene

The Okyehene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panyi has called for a decentralization of Ghana’s educational system to help improve upon the quality of education in the country.

According to him, the lack of decentralization has denied many educational institutions the right to take decisions that will better the lots of students.

“The Ghana of 1957 cannot be the Ghana of 2019, the Ghana where Dr. Kwame Nkrumah had a centralized government. It cannot hold because our population has increased and the same applies to our educational system for instance how can someone sit in Accra and control schools in Bolga,” Okyehene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panyi asked.

Speaking to Citi News at the 2nd public lecture series at the University of Education, Winneba under the theme ‘The role of Science and Technology in provision of quality education for sustainable national development’, the King of Akyem Abuakwa explained that quality of education can only be achieved through decentralization.

“No one can be corrupt if the system is decentralized because we will have the best-qualified teachers teaching our children and they will all pass well because if they don’t, the teacher in that town will be out of job,” he added.

The King of Abuakwa State also questioned why successive governments have failed in the decentralization process which according to him will bring development and open up the country for Investors.

“We have sixteen regions in Ghana now so I wonder what the Ministry of Agriculture is doing in Accra or even the Ministry of Forestry but if we really want to embark on this decentralization exercise then we have to make changes,” the king of Akyem Abuakwa said.

He also advocated for One region, One Ministry saying it must be considered in the decentralization process.

“President Akufo-Addo has the IDIF and I think he should also consider the One Region, One Ministry. This has the potential of opening up commerce because it will give opportunities to disadvantaged people, and economic activities will become vibrant,” the Okyehene said.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba Rev. Father Professor Anthony Afful Broni on his part indicated the University’s preparedness to encourage women in Science, Technology Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

According to him, women in STEM are relevant to the University because it speaks directly to how the school can better deliver this core mandate in a more sustainable way.

“I can assure you that this lecture will be a build-up to the earlier one and further point out issues that as teacher training institution can turn our attention to,” he said.

“As you will bear witness I have stated quite clearly that our University is aspiring to stand comparable to other top universities globally and these aspirations should be progressively forged,” Afful Broni explained.
