The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has said it is not privy to the new incentive package for health practitioners as disclosed by the Ghana Health Service.
Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, earlier this week announced that the service has developed a new incentive package, dubbed “The Deprived Incentive Area Incentive Scheme”.
The package is targeted at attracting health workers and retaining them in remote areas.
According to Dr. Nsiah-Asare, the scheme has been submitted to the Minister of Health for approval and for inclusion in the 2020 budget.
In an interview with Citi News, the Vice President of the Association, Dr. Frank Serebour said he is hopeful that, the incentive package would satisfy the demands of the association.
“As GMA, we are not aware. There is a need for us to attract and retain health professionals to deprived areas. I believe that whatever they have developed will be in line with our expectations. That is to provide accommodation for health staff and other paramedics. They should also get incentives like deprived allowances and vehicles. It should also be such that their terms of engagements will not be the same as people who are in advantageous areas.”
The refusal of health personnel to accept posting to deprived areas remains a major challenge to the GHS.
This situation has necessitated calls for systems to tackle the inequitable distribution of health staff, especially doctors in these communities.
As a major source of worry, the GHS has constantly promised to find a workable solution to minimize the impact of the situation on effective and quality healthcare.
