Two arrested over missing Savannah Region vehicle

Two persons have been arrested by the police in Tamale in connection with the disappearance of a Toyota Hilux pick-up belonging to the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council.

The suspects are Alhaji Suleimana Illiasu, in whose custody the vehicle was placed and Evans Kwadjo Opoku, the driver who was made to deliver the vehicle to Illiasu.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yussif Tanko said police investigations are ongoing.

He said any member of the public with information about the incident should volunteer it to assist the police in investigations.

“Yesterday the police in Tamale picked up two persons to assist in investigation. One of them is Alhaji Suleman and Illiasu. It was in his custody the vehicle was placed by the Minister. The second person who was arrested was the one who went to deliver the vehicle to Alhaji Eliasu. So the two are in custody and they assisting in investigation. We are also calling on any person who have any information on the missing vehicle to give that to the police.”

Members of both the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Savannah Region have been trading accusations over the disappearance of the vehicle.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the NDC in the region gave the Regional Minister five days to produce the stolen vehicle or face their wrath.

The statement further accused the Minister of conniving with one Alhaji Illiasu, a businessman with whom the Toyota Hilux was handed over to before it was stolen.

The NPP also called on the police to invite the NDC to assist in the investigation to retrieve the vehicle.

According to the NPP, the NDC has continuously given varied accounts of the circumstances leading to the stealing of the vehicle.

They believe the NDC has knowledge of the location of the vehicle.
