Rector of Bolgatanga Polytechnic Professor Samuel Erasmus Alnaa has appealed to the government to grant the polytechnic financial clearance to recruit both teaching and non-teaching staff to replace its retired staff.
According to him, lecturers are overwhelmed by the increasing student’s enrolment over the years without a corresponding staff strength.
Prof. Alnaa made the appeal at the seventh congregation of the Polytechnic in Sumbrungu, last Saturday.“The polytechnic has lost some staff through deaths, resignation and retirement, without placement since 2013. The increasing student enrolment and equipment holding coupled with the introduction of many new programmes. There is the need however for the replacement to help reduce the heavy loads on the existing staff.”
“The Polytechnic has not also been able to employ adequate part-time staff due to low internally generated funds. We, therefore, appeal to the government to consider our request for financial clearance to enable the polytechnic to replace its separated staff in order to meet the current growth and actualize the mission and vision of the polytechnic.”
Bolga Polytechnic ready for conversion
Prof. Alnaa reiterated that the Polytechnic has met the required criteria by the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) and appealed to the authorities that be to convert the polytechnic into a technical university.
The Bolgatanaga and Wa polytechnics in the Upper East and West regions respectively were the only two, out of the ten polytechnics not converted into technical universities.
“On December 2017, I intimated that the Bolgatanga Polytechnic had met the requirement for conversion into a technical university and two years down the lane we are still not converted. We are overqualified and should be spared the anxiety, the agony of what to do next and the excruciating psychological pain of being tantalized with a technical university status”.
He added that the school could be converted while the AMATROL and AVIC projects aimed at providing ultra-modern engineering workshops and laboratories are speedily worked on and handed over for use.

He said, the Bill when passed, will make a statutory allocation of funds to enhance the research work of lecturers for effective delivery.
“I urge the staff to come up with innovative ideas and projects towards securing corporate funding and partnership to contribute to the development of the Upper East Region.”
A total of 299 successfully graduated with a Higher National Diploma and Bachelor of Technology programmes.
