Prior to the introduction of the prepaid electricity system, electricity bills were postpaid.
Customers had to wait for officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to bring them their bills.
Citi News‘ Marie-Franz Fordjoe tells the story of Samsam, a farming community in the Ga West Municipality that had to wait 6 years for its first bill.
The bills, however, marked the beginning of dark times for them as the state power distributor, ECG refuses to give them ample time to repay the accrued debts, some of which are as high as GHc10, 000
The least amount owed is GHc2, 000 which is expected to be paid immediately. But the residents, mostly farmers say they will be unable to cough up these significant sums even in three months.
However, according to them, ECG refuses to consider their plight and has since cut power supply to more than 80 percent of the mountainous community.
