Chiefs targeting 80% endorsement for Oti Region in referendum

The Joint Consultative Committee on the creation of the Oti Region is targetting an overwhelming endorsement for the new region in the upcoming referendum.

The Chairman of the Committee, Nana Mprah Besemuna ll disclosed that the chiefs and leaders of the area have commenced a campaign to ensure at least 80 percent of voters endorse the new region.

He told Citi News the exercise is also to educate the indigenes on the importance of having a new region.

This follows the dismissal of a suit challenging the legality of the processes for the creation of the regions.

The Supreme Court, with its ruling, has given clearance to the Electoral Commission (EC) to hold its referendum in selected areas earmarked for the creation of the regions.

“We’ve moved from house to house, village to village. I myself I have been moving from village to village to let them know what to do so that on that day everybody comes out [to vote] and we are sure we are going to come out in our numbers.”

“I wouldn’t even be surprised if it is 100 percent yes votes,” Nana Mprah Besemuna ll added.

The Electoral Commission set December 27, 2018, for the referendum on the creation of six new regions.

A 19-member Commission of Enquiry, after holding nationwide consultations, recommended that the government create the administrative regions to be known as the Oti, Ahafo, Brong East, Western North, North East, and Savannah regions.

The Electoral Commission has already held a limited voter registration in the areas which will be involved in the referendum.
