Leadership of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), whose members are on strike, are expected told hold a crucial meeting today [Wednesday], to deliberate on their next line of action.
The meeting follows new rounds of negotiations by executives of CETAG and the Education ministry. The teachers declared the strike a fortnight ago, over their unpaid salary arrears.
Speaking to Citi News, the National Secretary of CETAG, Prince Obeng-Himah, said they will make a determination on the way forward after the crunch meeting.“We have been consistent right from day one that we wanted to get the specific time frame within which the money was going to be paid to us. And for the government’s side, I will not be able to speak for them. We are speaking for ourselves. But I must say that we have reached some kind of agreement that we think it is a fair deal. We are going back to our people and brief them so they won’t hear the outcome of the meeting in the media instead of us first.”
“So that is why the chairpersons representing the five zones of the Association will come. We will give them the briefing including the literature supporting all the things we had. Then we can make some pronouncements tomorrow,” he added.
Gov’t, CETAG negotiations on salary arrears break down
The teachers declared the strike some few weeks ago, but were willing to call it off following government’s intervention, and the commencement of discussions on the matter.
The Association had accused government of failing to pay them their arrears since October 2016.
All 38 Colleges of Education across the country are still closed as academic work is expected to be further disrupted by the development.
A meeting between the leadership of CETAG and government on November 14 hit a deadlock, after it failed to get the teachers back to the lecture halls.
Trainee teachers want semester extended
