Sangnarigu — Some unidentified suspected armed robbers shot and killed a policewoman and bolted with weapons belonging to the police at Malshegu, a suburb of Sangnarigu municipal of the Northern Region, on Tuesday night.
The policewoman was among three police officers who were on duty at Star Oil Fuel station at the outskirts of the community.
An eyewitness, who only gave his name as Adam, in an interview with the Ghanaian Times on Wednesday, said the four suspected armed robbers stormed the fuel station with unregistered saloon car and fired indiscriminately leading to the death of the policewoman.
He stated that the police took to their heels when the suspected armed robbers opened fire at them.
Adam said that one of the policemen returned fire after the suspected robbers had bolted with two weapons of his colleagues.
He said that the suspected armed robbers were in military camouflaged uniforms when they stormed the station.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Northern Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohammed Yussif Tanko, confirmed the incident, and said investigations were underway to arrest the suspected armed robbers.
He said the police visited the fuel station yesterday and retrieved empty shells at the crime scene.
DSP Tanko declined further comment because the police command was yet to inform the family of the deceased about the incident.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital mortuary.
Late last year, a similar incident occurred in the Tamale metropolis, where armed robbers attacked the police at another fuel station, and three weapons of the police were seized by the armed robbers.
