Tamale — The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has entreated Members of Parliament (MPs) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to team up to ensure progressive development of the country.
He emphasised the urgent need for the MPs and MMDCEs to develop cordial working relationships in order to improve the living conditions of the people.
President Akufo-Addo was speaking at a day's workshop on Leadership and Good Governance for MPs and MMDCEs drawn from the Northern, Upper East and West Regions in Tamale on Saturday.
The workshop, organised by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs was meant to help strengthen good governance at the Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
President Akufo-Addo indicated that building strong bonds and cooperation between the two major stakeholders would go a long way to propel development of the communities.
He stressed that team work was cardinal and pre-requisite for successful execution of programmes and policies.
The President, therefore, admonished them to do away with unnecessary pity quarrels and adopt mutual and appropriate ways and means to work together for the betterment of the society.
"It is imperative, regardless of our political, ethnic or religious affiliations, that MPs and MMDCEs work together as a team, with the major objective of helping to improve the living standards of the Ghanaian people," he stated.
He maintained that team work brought success while turf war certainly retarded progress of the development.
President Akufo-Addo indicated that the new paradigm of effective governance demanded maximum co-operation and collaboration between the major players for greater achievement of developmental goals.
He remarked that the government's vision of Ghana Beyond Aid would remain a dream if the MPs and MMDCEs failed to work together.
The President added that the team work between the two bodies would help ensure successful implementation of the government flagship programmes and policies such as Planting for Food and Jobs and the Free Senior High School.
President Akufo-Addo also entreated them to create inter-districts and constituencies collaboration to help address sanitation and other related issues at the various areas.
The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu indicated that his outfit was working hard to address the conflicts between MPs and MMDCEs.
He stated that the continued conflicts and difference between the MPs and MMDCEs was hampering development of the districts and that it was important for all to help address it.
The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama assured of her ministry's readiness to improve cordial relationship between the MPs and MMDCEs.
