The First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo on Thursday, inaugurated a Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound, fully furnished by the Rebecca Foundation for the people of Seduase in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality (KKMA) of the Greater Accra Region.
In her address, Mrs Akufo-Addo acknowledged that the CHPS concept remained Ghana's strategic tool for achieving universal health coverage, "and more importantly for me, reaching our vulnerable pregnant women and children with essential health services."
She said that the burden of diseases and "premature deaths in our part of the world and Ghana in particular could be prevented through the effective delivery of health services which included the CHPS concept."
"It is important therefore, that we reach citizens, especially those in hard to reach rural areas with affordable basic health care. It is in light of this that the Rebecca Foundation is very committed to working with key stakeholders to ensure that women and children get the best possible health care and position them fully to contribute to national development," she remarked.
The First Lady said the project offered another opportunity to invest in what the Rebecca Foundation believes would make a difference in the lives of women and children for which it supported the facility with all equipment needed, including a complete delivery set, hospital beds and a generator.
"We must deepen our partnership, health partners, the private sector, civil society organisations, religious and traditional authorities and non-governmental organisations must all come together to build effective, responsive, fair and efficient health systems to provide accessible health services to the growing population," she said.
Mrs Akufo-Addo expressed joy that the facility was a fully functional National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) accredited CHPS compound, able to provide preventive and treatment services and refer patients to bigger health centres for further diagnosis and treatment.
The facility is serviced by two community health nurses, a midwife and a staff nurse which she observed would ensure that the community would have a full complement of basic health services especially for maternal and child health.
She urged Ghanaians to rally behind the government to make health care more accessible and available for all Ghanaians.
She acknowledged all generous givers and institutions who supported the Rebecca Foundation in its activities.
Municipal Chief Executive of KKMA, Mr Solomon Tetteh Appiah stated that the assembly was in partnership with relevant stakeholders including companies to create the opportunity for the improvement and transformation of health delivery system in the municipality.
The Municipal Director of Health Services, Mrs Rita Patricia Frimpong Amanyo expressed the hope that the facility would help reduce long travel hours, especially of complicated cases, from the Seduase community to the Kpone Health Centre which is the only accessible health centre.
