The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo has announced that 126 street lights have been restored across all 29 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the region.
The Minister disclosed this on March 25, 2025 at a press briefing in Accra.
This follows an earlier promise by the Minster to ensure the full operations of at least 70 percent of streetlights in the region within 50 days of assuming office.
According to her, this initiative aligns with the government’s reset agenda to improve visibility and enhance security across the capital.
“Today, March 25, marks exactly my 50 days in office and I am pleased to report that significant progress has been made and in all, about 126 streetlights have been worked on, including some highways, town roads, and community roads across the 29 MMDAs in the region,” the Minister said.
She listed some areas to have benefited from the initiative including the George Walker Bush Highway, Nima Highway, ACP to Pokuase, Independence Avenue (Jubilee House) and the New Town junction to Ashaiman road.
However, the Minister said streetlights could not be restored on the Tema Motorway and the Accra-Tema Beach Road due to ongoing construction works.
“Additionally, there is maintenance works on streetlights on portions on the N1(Tetteh Quarshie to kasoa), N6 (Achimota to Amasaman) and N4 (shiashie to oyibi) by the Ghana Highways Authority and the contractor is on site with works ongoing,” she added.
The Regional Minister cautioned against stealing of streetlight cable which she said is one major challenge hampering the efforts of ensuring streets remain lighted.
She appealed for persons involved in the act to desist and safeguard public infrastructure.
“I must stress that the incidence of theft poses a major set-back for the sustainability of our streets remaining lighted. Anyone caught stealing these vital components will face severe consequences.
“We must all be on the look out and say something if we see something. I will ensure that, the Metropolitan, Municipal and District chief Executives who are the Chairpersons for the District Security Communittees, formulate modalities to track these miscreants upon assumption of office,” Linda Ocloo noted.
