The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has commended the government’s 24-hour economy policy, but is urging the administration to develop a comprehensive national policy to address the growing unemployment crisis and political interference in job creation.
Speaking to 3News on the sidelines of the Brong Ahafo Regional Conference in Sunyani, the General Secretary of the ICU, Morgan Ayawine, emphasized the need for a holistic approach to tackle the unemployment situation in Ghana.
While applauding the government’s 24-hour economy initiative, which has the potential to create jobs and boost productivity, Mr. Morgan Ayawine believes it is not enough to solve the deep-rooted unemployment challenges facing the country.
“What we need is a well-structured national policy that focuses on job creation, skills development, and the elimination of political interference in employment processes” he emphasized on March 21.
The ICU General Secretary highlighted the persistent issue of political influence in job placements, which often sidelines qualified individuals and undermines merit-based employment systems. He called for a transparent and inclusive framework to ensure fair opportunities for all Ghanaians.
The ICU’s call comes amid rising concerns over youth unemployment and underemployment, particularly in rural areas. The union stressed that without a coordinated national strategy, the benefits of the 24-hour economy policy may not reach the most vulnerable populations.
“We need a policy that not only creates jobs but also ensures that these jobs are sustainable and accessible to all, regardless of political affiliations. The government must work closely with stakeholders, including labor unions, to design and implement solutions that address the root causes of unemployment.”
The Brong Ahafo Regional Conference served as a platform for the ICU to engage with its members and discuss strategies to advocate for better working conditions, fair wages, and improved labor policies.
The ICU used the occasion to inaugurate its regional executives who would be steering the affairs of the Union in the next four years.
The Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of ICU, Seth Kofi Ofori, in an interview reiterated his commitment to protecting workers’ rights and promoting inclusive economic growth.
“I will ensure that the organization grows and also take the welfare of the employees, so here we will ensure visibility, we will be more open, quarry information from them, making sure that things are going on right path,” he started.
As Ghana continues to grapple with unemployment, the ICU’s call for a national policy underscores the urgency for collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and labor organizations to create a more equitable and prosperous future for all citizens.
