The Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has said that a united Ghana and Africa would ensure self-reliance.
She noted that despite the continent’s contribution to the development of the western world, the efforts are least appreciated.
“I have heard the President in the country you are studying, slashing aid, one of the questions he has not asked himself, how much leaves our continent to his country? He hasn’t asked himself that. They think it’s just charity, it’s not. So, we need to come together. In going forward, it’s about building the bridges, it’s also about uniting the African family… so we need to reach out to many more, if we don’t, it won’t solve the problem,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed.
The Vice President said this when she engaged a delegation of Masters students from the Havard University at the Jubilee House in Accra on March 17.
Discussions centered on matters concerning Ghana’s democracy, government’s priority areas in governance, women in politics, Ghana as an example in Africa among others.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said women may be limited in the political space because of historical antecedents that thwarted their efforts to education and urged women to rise above the negative perceptions.
“As we shape up and go up, we keep disappearing that is why it becomes news… oh there is a first female Vice Chancellor why should it become news? We should get to the level where she is there because she is there, she went through the ropes like everyone else. I see powerful women not necessary at the top of affairs, we can draw from their strengths, we can use their examples and for anyone to feel that because you are born a woman and you want to support women,” the Vice President said.
