The recent unannounced power outages in parts of Kumasi have prompted residents to call for a load-shedding timetable.
According to the Electricity Company of Ghana, the ongoing power instability is due to technical challenges at the Anwomaso Bulk Supply point.
However, residents have expressed frustration, stating that the situation is disrupting their business activities and demands immediate intervention.
These fluctuations have caused damage to electrical appliances in many households.
“If there is a problem with the electricity supply, it should be made public so we can plan accordingly. However, the unannounced outages and power fluctuations are concerning. As we speak, my fridge has been damaged due to the power fluctuation,” fumed Martha Owusu, a resident.
Business owners who depend on electricity argue that having a timetable would allow for better planning and preparation.
“Every day, the lights go on and off. Because we operate with electricity, this situation has become unbearable. Some of our machines have been damaged because of these power issues. At least if there is a timetable, we can manage the situation,” said Kwame Bonsu.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, also expressed concern about the power fluctuations in the region during the visit of the Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Jinapor.
The Minister visited Kumasi to assess ongoing projects at power stations and discuss significant developments in the energy sector.
“In some instances, the power goes off and then comes back after five minutes. This damages many electrical appliances. If there is a major fault, it is better to turn it off for hours and fix it before restoring power. We also need to keep the public informed,” he suggested.
John Jinapor noted that his visit aimed to reassure residents about the government’s commitment to resolving the power crisis.
During his inspection, the Minister evaluated GRIDCo’s newly commissioned 145MVA transformer, the New Power Enclave, and other critical facilities at Anwomaso in the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
“We inherited a power system that was shedding about 750 megawatts of load as of December, but we are determined to stabilize the power supply, particularly in the Ashanti Region. We are injecting significant supply points in terms of power generation in Kumasi. Soon, Kumasi will become a major point of power supply,” John Jinapor disclosed.
Until the power situation is resolved, residents will have to bear the brunt of the power fluctuations.
