Fourteen out of 16 persons who were arrested in connection with an electoral violence at Damongo in the Savannah Region have been remanded in prison custody by a Kumasi High Court.
Violence erupted in the constituency on December 8 following delays in the declaration of the election results, resulting in the death of one person and burning of the district office of the Electoral Commission.
The police managed to arrest 16 persons suspected to be part of the violent protest and arraigned them in Kumasi, over 250 miles away from Savannah Region, for security reasons.
The plea of the accused was not taken when they appeared before the court on Thursday, December 12.
The State Attorney prayed that the plea be deferred for prosecution to have ample time to conclude investigation.
But the defense counsel argued for a bail for his clients, stating that two of the accused are minors.
The Court ordered the release of the minors and handed them over to one Alhaji Imor Seidu, who is expected to present them at every court sitting.
The 14 remaining suspects were remanded into prison custody to reappear on December 19, 2024.
The accused persons are standing trial on causing unlawful damage, causing harm, and obstruction of electoral officers in the performance of their duties.
