The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffor Bronye, has accused former President John Mahama of being dishonest about receiving ex-gratia payments.
The NPP chairman alleged that the opposition leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ex-President Mahama has been spreading falsehoods in order to win the heart of the electorates.
He emphasized that it is untrue that Mr. John Dramani Mahama did not receive any ex-gratia in 2013 when he succeeded the late President Atta-Mills, on July 24th, 2012.
Addressing the media in Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital, the NPP Chairman asserted that former President John Dramani Mahama has been campaigning and peddling falsehoods that he will cancel ex-gratia if he wins this year’s election. He expressed with no doubts the move is just to throw dust into the eyes of the public, disclosing that he is still a beneficiary of ex-gratia.
“It must be stated emphatically that former president John Dramani Mahama cannot be trusted a little bit about his campaign message, especially the promise that ex-gratia will be cancelled under his government. He cannot also be trusted because of his past broken promises,” he said.
Chairman Abronye alleged that former John Mahama received Ghc29,899 from 2017 to 2021, which increased to Ghc49,730 thereafter.
He disclosed that he wrote to the Controller and Accountant General Department under the Right to Information Act, Act 989, 2019 on October 23, 2023, to grant him access to ex-gratia paid to the former president. On the 4th of April 2024, the Controller and Accountant General Department issued a response to his request
which was contrary to the claim made by the former president, who is the presidential candidate of the opposition NDC.
“It could be gleaned from the controller’s letter that the former president was paid ex gratia in 2013 totalling 8,000,000 million Ghana cedis for the period he succeeded the late president in 2012. Mr. John Dramani Mahama’s monthly pension, which is in the form of ex-gratia, has been increased from Gh29,899.00 in 2017 to Gh49,730.00.”
The Bono NPP Chairman has therefore rejected Mahama’s claims of not receiving ex-gratia payments, describing his message as falsehood and deceptive.
Moreover, he urged the general public not to believe John Mahama’s “lies and propaganda” and instead vote for a trustworthy Dr. Bawumia and the NPP on December 7 to transform the country.
