NDC MPs will avoid any recall of Parliament before elections – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George has said it will be an exercise in futility for Parliament to be recalled some few weeks to the December elections.

The House has been adjourned indefinitely by Speaker Bagbin due to the vacant seats controversy which has now been settled after the Supreme Court verdict.

Parliament is expected to be recalled following the Supreme Court’s ruling that Speaker Bagbin’s declaration of four seats vacant is unconstitutional.

However, speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints on November 16, Sam George said the NDC MPs will not regard any recall of Parliament because they’re currently campaigning actively in their respective constituencies ahead of the 2024 elections.

According to him, they will only respect any recall after December 11 when the election activities have been settled.

“Any attempt to recall us will be an exercise in futility. We won’t come. We will come back after the elections so Parliament can be recalled after December 11,” he stated.

In a related development, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has directed the party’s members of Parliament to boycott any emergency recall of the House.

He says NDC is committed to protect Ghana’s democracy and its institutions, thus the party won’t permit a select few to compromise the country’s democratic foundations and pledged to take all necessary steps to safeguard them.

“The current situation in Parliament with judges warning of a potential collapsing of government business if Parliament doesn’t convene, no government business will collapse. Amidst this uncertainty, I’m advising NDC members of Parliament to boycott any emergency recall,” he noted during his campaign at Asasetre in the Ellembelle constituency of the Western Region.
