The Eastern Regional Health Directorate has confirmed its first case of cholera in the Abuakwa South Municipality.
The case was detected in a student who returned to school in Kyebi from Kasoa in the Central region.
Regional Health Director, Dr Winfred Ofosu said that the contacts of the case are being traced to contain the spread while heightening surveillance in the region.
He spoke exclusively to Media General’s Eastern regional correspondent, Yvonne Neequaye on Monday November 4.
“The Student was showing signs of cholera, specimen was taken to the laboratory, while the student was taken to the Kyebi government hospital for management. The laboratory results turned out positive.” Dr Winfred Ofosu explained
He also highlighted the measures put in place to forestall the spread.
“Once we got the message we activated the containment measures to make sure that the disease doesn’t spread to the larger population. And among them, we look for close contact of the student, we had 33 respondents which we are monitoring to see if any of them would develop in the system of testing,” he said.
Dr Ofosu said sensitization has been reinforced.
“We have set alert all around, done education in communities to allay the fears of the people in the area,” he said.
He advised School Management to provide handwashing facilities while the Kitchen staff of Senior High Schools to adhere to hygiene standards” it is very important washing facilities are provided in schools. Kitchen Staff must ensure strict adherence to personal hygiene. They must also ensure that they serve food hot, drinking water must be from a trusted source or boiled before use”
