The revamped 2024-25 Uefa Champions League competition kicks off on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, with a new-look league system replacing the group stage format.
An increase in the number of participating sides means, 36 teams will feature in this year’s edition, which is four more than previous years.
Ahead of the intriguing match-ups under the lights, 3Sports takes a look at some Ghanaian stars who could feature in the competition.
Ibrahim Sulemana, Atalanta
The 21-year-old midfielder joined Atalanta from Cagliari for €7.5m in the summer. Sulemana has struggled to cement his spot as a mainstay in head coach Gasperini’s side, playing just a minute in four league games thus far.
The midfielder, who missed two of Atalanta’s four league games due to injury, will be hoping to get some minutes under his belt against Arsenal on Wednesday after settling for a place on the bench against Fiorentina at the weekend on his injury return.
Thomas Partey, Arsenal
Thomas Partey is the most experienced Ghanaian on the list, making 32 Champions League appearances and scoring twice.
The former Atletico Madrid man has been one of Mikel Arterta’s go-to men in the 2024-25 season, playing all four of Arsenal’s league games. Partey will be in the mix on Wednesday in Bergamo against Atalanta.
Kamal Sowah, Club Brugge
Despite being an outcast at Club Brugge, Kamal Sowah is still contracted to the club until 2025.
The former Right to Dream graduate turned down Mexican side FC Juárez’s offer, opting to stay with the Belgian outfit.
Sowah has 12 Champions League appearances under his belt and will latch on to any opportunities afforded him.
Ibrahim Osman, Feyenoord
Ibrahim Osman finally graced the pitch on Saturday for Feyenoord following his loan move from Brighton and Hove Albion. The youngster was waiting on the completion of his paperwork which had kept him out of action in the previous weeks.
Osman lasted 29 minutes and will be eager to impress the home crowd in Rotterdam when Bayer Leverkusen visit.
Mohammed Salisu, Monaco
The towering center-back has been amongst the consistent performers for club and country this term.
He has been instrumental for Monaco this season, helping the team to keep three clean sheets in four Ligue 1 games, and will be in line to make his Champions League debut against Barcelona on Thursday.
Sharani Zuberu, Sk Slovan Bratislava
Zuberu has had a tough start to the Slovakia season for Slovan Bratislava, featuring in three of his side’s six games.
The forward was introduced as a stoppage time substitute over the weekend in their 2-1 win over Dunajská Streda.
Bratislava open their Champions League campaign against Celtic on September 18.
Patric Pfeiffer, Young boys
The defender joined Young boys on a season-long loan from German club Augsburg.
Pfeiffer is yet to feature for Young Boys this season due to being sidelined with injury.
However, the Ghanaian is expected to make his Uefa Champions League debut this season with the Swiss powerhouse.
