The Northern Regional correspondent of Media General, Christopher Amoako, has been adjudged the 2023 Overall Best Journalist for the Northern, North East, and Savannah regions.
He also took home the Best Journalist in Education Reporting and Best Reporter in Development Journalism in furthering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The fourth edition of the Northern Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) awards scheme, which was under the theme: “Ensuring violence- free elections, the role of the media”, is in recognition of excellence in journalism in the year under review (2023) and stories that had a positive impact on the lives of the people in the respective regions.
Northern Regional Chairman of the GJA, Yakubu Abdul Majeed, urged journalists in the regions to remain objective in the discharge of their duties despite financial constraints.
“We should not allow financial constraints that usually engulf media houses to produce shoddy work.”
He appealed to media owners to support journalists deliver on their work.
“I wish to state that media houses should not leave journalist to their fate but should at all times provide the needed resources and protection to do their work without fear or favor.”
For his part, Finance Minister and MP for Karaga Constituency, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, who was the Guest Speaker at the awards ceremony, applauded the Ghana Journalists Association for ensuring the peace of the country.
He urged media owners to ensure their staff are well paid to prevent them from being used by politicians and other influential people contrary to the ethics of the profession.
“I have worked with journalists and I must say some of them are not paid well. Let me use this platform to appeal to media owners to pay their workers well to bring out their best”

The other journalists who won awards included Rosemary Wayo of Ghana News Agency, Best Road Safety Reporter; Yakubu Abdul-Wahab Yumza, Zaa TV, Best Disability Awareness Reporter; Alhassan Dokurgu, Asaase fm: Best Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Reporter; Solomon Gumah, Best Agriculture Reporter.
The rest are Mohammed Fugu, Graphic Communications Ltd; Best environment and climate change reporter, Abdul Mumin Abdul Razak, Sagani TV, Best Health reporter, Bawa Abdul Mugis, Sagani TV, Best Sports Reporter, Kawusar Musah, Sagani TV; Most promising young female regional broadcaster and Issahaku Walkiyatu, Filla Fm; Most Promising young female journalist of the year.
Bole based Nkilgi Fm, was recorgnized as the Best radio station in Savannah region
