It is a no brainer that the Ablekuma South Constituency is a safe seat for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Our reporter Grace Hammoah Agyemang has been spending time in the constituency and reports that constituents say, they will be influenced by ideas and initiatives that will improve their lot.
Ablekuma South is one of the vibrant constituencies out of the 29 in Accra, boasting of a voter population in excess of sixty thousand, according to the 2020 election results.
The seat has been a safe one for the NDC since 2008, winning 60 percent of the votes in the 2020 elections, over the NPP’s 38 percent, even though the latter held the seat from 1996 to 2004.
The constituency covers areas including Korle Gonno, Korle Bu, Chorkor, Mamprobi and New Mamprobi, with a predominantly coastal economy.
As the December polls approach, electorates say their vote will be informed by some key issues of which the closed season fishing initiative by government is key.
“This government introduced a major policy initiative, the closed fishing season, which affects our work directly, but I think we were not broadly consulted on it, and that has gravely affected our catch. So, if there’s no change, I will vote for another party, instead of the NPP,” said a constituent who is a fisherman.
This condition coupled with the prevailing economic challenges in the country has worsened the living conditions of some people who say they are not enticed to vote.
Atwei, a fishmonger, said “I am not motivated to vote anymore because the politicians don’t fulfill any of the promises they make to us during campaigns”.
Some youth in the constituency advocated for prudent policies that will improve education.
“Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije is our incumbent MP, but he has not done enough for us. The NDC thinks because it is a safe seat for them, they will always win, the tables can turn,” said another constituent.
The incumbent MP, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije will slug it out with NPP’s Samuel Sarbah Lartey (aka Teacher Agoe) for the Ablekuma South seat on the December 7,2024.
