Pre-tertiary teacher unions have warned the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to ensure that its payroll monitoring exercise in the education sector does not result in the freezing of salaries of teachers.
According to the unions, the FWSC should engage the Ghana Education Service before rolling out the payroll monitoring exercise.
The Commission is set to begin the next face of its payroll monitoring exercise. Already, it has audited government agencies in the Volta, Central and Western regions.
The Chief Executive Officer of Commission, Ben Arthur, underscored the relevance of auditing payroll of the education sector.
“Where we will see clear cut abuse, we will not wait, and I have always said that if all of us should do our work well, the country will move forward,” he stated.
Ahead of that, the pre-tertiary teacher unions have cautioned against freezing of salaries of teachers when the exercise begins.
President of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu said, the exercise could waste government resources.
“We won’t stop anybody from their work. It has become evident that under the OSP, freezing salaries were illegal. The Fair Wages can do anything, but it should be within the confines of the law,” he demanded.
Communication Director of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Adokwei Awulley urged the Commision to ensure that it engages the Ghana Education Service before beginning the exercise.
“You cannot do audit without consulting the employer, the Ghana Education Service, they should engage them,” he advised.
He also spoke about the need for the FWSC to consider auditing other agencies under the Ministry of Education.
“If they really want to find out those who are not working, they should go to the ministries where they have created multiple agencies. They should go those places, they should not come to the classroom teacher who is doing his work,” Mr Carbonu said.
