President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians that the facilities built for the 13th African Games will be well maintained.
He says the Borteyman Sports Complex, in particular, will serve as the nucleus of facilities for a new university to be dedicated to sports development, the University for Sports Development.
President Akufo-Addo was speaking during the closing ceremony of the Games on Saturday, March 23.
The official closing ceremony, held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, brings to an end 15 days of sporting activities from athletics to volleyball.
The activities were held at various venues including the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Accra Sports Stadium, Cape Coast Sports Stadium, Bukom Boxing Emporium, Alisa Hotel, Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch and the Borteyman Sports Complex, which is a new facility set up for the Games.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo assured that the facilities will be well maintained.
“I assure my fellow Ghanaians that these facilities will be well maintained and will serve as appropriate venues for training future champions and for hosting international sporting tournaments and competitions,” he said.
“Indeed, the facilities will act as the nucleus of the soon-to-be established University of Sports for Development and will also be the venues for the holding of the Ghana National Games, that’s an annual sports festival where winners from regional levels will meet to compete for top national honours.”
President Akufo-Addo was grateful to the African Union for keeping faith with Ghana to host the Games in the midst of challenges brought about by the global pandemic, COVID-19.
Ghana placed 6th on the medals table after the Games with Egypt topping with 187 medals in total.
