The military men who were seen in viral video brutalizing civilians on the streets of Wa in the Upper West Region have been charged, tried and handed various degrees of punishments.
Some have been demoted while others have been handed a 30-day detention in a guard room.
This was disclosed to Parliament when the Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul briefed the house on the outcome of investigations and actions taken in the matter so far. He said 86 soldiers were in all involved, of which 30 have so far been interrogated.
The Minister said three officers have been demoted.They are Orderly who has been demoted from Staff Sergeant to Corporal, a Guard Commander who has been demoted from Corporal to Private and the Sentry demoted from Lance Corporal to Private.
Mr. Nitiwul said the trial of the Duty officer who is a Lieutenant will, however, be carried on a later date.
Eight soldiers who were seen in the viral videos brutalising the residents have been handed a 30-day detention each by the disciplinary committee chaired by the Commanding Officer.
According to the Minister, investigations also revealed that 11 persons suffered various degrees of injury including Gafur Mahama, who has had to undergo a surgery.
Three other persons were admitted to the Wa Municipal Hospital.
Upon interrogation some of the victims complained they lost 13 mobile phones, a tricycle and an amount of GHc1,460 for three different people; but 7 of the mobile phones have been retrieved and the tricycle returned to the owner. No money has been retrieved as yet.
