Mahama reveals reason why he chose to challenge Election 2020 than concede
Former President John Dramani Mahama says he is heading to court over results of the December 7 elections for the same reason why then New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, headed to court in 2012.
In a live broadcast a few hours after filing his petition at the Supreme Court over the election results, the 2020 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) put his reason succinctly:
“I want the removal of doubt!”
The former president’s lawyer, Tony Lithur, on Wednesday afternoon filed the petition at the Court to demand the annulment of the declaration made by Chair of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) Jean Adukwei Mensa, on Wednesday, December 9.
The petition, among other reliefs, also seeks a rerun of the presidential elections, asking the Court for an order to restrain Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Second Respondent, from holding himself out as President-elect.
“Some people have asked me what I hope to gain by challenging the results of this election,” Mr Mahama said.
“Let me tell you. I want perhaps the very same thing that my opponent wanted when in 2012 he challenged the results of that election.
“I want the removal of doubt.
“I want for all of us to know that our elections should be free, fair and safe and that we don’t have to settle for a process that leaves us confused and with more questions than answers.”
