Some youth of Breman Jamera in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District of the Central Region have prevented the police in the area from arresting their members who allegedly physically assaulted the MP and the DCE in the area.
Member of Parliament for Asikuma Odoben Brakwa, Anthony Effah and the DCE, Isaac Odoom, had gone to the town to ascertain the state of a 79-year-old concrete bridge over River Okye on the Breman Asikuma–Akyem Oda road which collapsed last Saturday after a downpour.
The bridge, already showing signs of weakness, collapsed after the river overflowed its banks following the downpour.
It has cut off some communities within the area.
A resident, Peter Yaw Owongo-Otoo said when the MP, the DCE and other New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executives got to Breman Jamera, they observed that some youths were collecting 1.00 cedi and 2.00 cedis from pedestrians who were crossing a small make-shift bridge.
He said following the collapsed of the bridge, the youth used coconut branches make a temporary bridge to enable pedestrians cross the river. Those who failed to pay were denied access.
This, according to Mr Owongo-Otoo, caused the MP and his entourage to inquire why they were collecting such monies from the people and who they were going to account the monies to.
But before the MP and his entourage could get response, the youth allegedly pounced on them and started brutalizing them.
He said the police were called in to calm down the situation and arrest persons behind the attack but some of the youth prevented the police from making any arrest.
The teeming youth overpowered the police causing them to retreat due to the chaotic atmosphere created.
When contacted by Onua FM, the MP who is currently in hospital bed, confirmed the incident and said a delegation of chiefs from Breman Jamera had come to him to plead for the matter to be settled.
The District Police Commander was not available to speak to the issue at the time of filing the report.
