The minority in parliament is calling on the government to allow for use the 5,000 units of affordable housing project at Saglemi, near the Prampram in the Greater Accra Region.
The $200 million project which was started under the administration of the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) was to improve the housing deficit in country, but only about 600 units were said to have been completed before they left office.
But upon assumption of office by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the government caused an investigation into the cost of the project while the housing units stood unoccupied.
Even though the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had said during his second state of the nation address that the government will prioritise the project, nothing has yet been done in that regard.
“The Saglemi Housing Project, started under the last NDC government, is also high on our list of priorities this year. The five thousand units it offers would boost our housing numbers. We are, therefore, establishing the value for money issues surrounding the project in order to reconcile the number of houses built with the schedule of payments made, and accelerate delivery”, the president said in parliament.
Interacting with the media on a tour of the facility Tuesday, April 16, ranking member on the Works and Housing Committee, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzra, said it is indefensible that the facility still stands unoccupied.
According to him, about half of the project has been completed.
“We were here with the minister of works and housing on Thursday [last week] to assess the project and we noticed that about almost half of percentage of the housing has been completed and there are no occupant in the houses, we have the road network, we have electricity all connected and then people are not living in”, he noted.
He urged government to make provisions for people to move into the houses to help solve issues of housing shortages in the country.
“People are looking for housing to stay in, we don’t have places to stay in and this houses have been completed so we are waiting for government to take initiative to ask people to move into the house, government to do anything in their power to make sure that these houses are occupied”.
