Former President John Dramani Mahama has noted with worry the absence of any “tangible update” on President Akufo-Addo’s promise to pay back monies to victims of the infamous DKM scam and other micro-finance scams when he toured the Brong Ahafo Region over the weekend.
A statement signed by his Special Aide, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, reads, “Also conspicuously missing on the President’s agenda in the Brong Ahafo Region was a tangible update on efforts to make good his promise to pay victims of the micro-finance scams that became a subject of his campaign in 2016”.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Friday, May 18 began on a three-day tour of the Brong Ahafo Region where he among other things commissioned the new Divisional Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service in Techiman and also cut the sod for the construction of a new District Hospital at Nkoranza.
He among other things also urged residents of the Brong Ahafo Region to be wary of unlicensed microfinance institutions, but former President John Mahama feels a word of caution from the President is not enough.
In one of the speeches made by the President on his tour, he described as “ghost projects” infrastructural investments the John Mahama-led government claimed to have made.
But the former President did not take the comments of the president lightly as he hit back, describing him as “touring the country empty handed with little or nothing to show for his stewardship”.

Mr Mahama is not particularly happy that the President is not honest to admit his government has invested hugely in infrastructure.
“It is regrettable that President Akufo-Addo has yet again failed to exhibit candour in his speech, this time to the Chiefs and people of Nkoranza in Brong Ahafo Region. It is even more worrying when there is overwhelming evidence of the massive investment made in the provision of various projects for the people of Ghana,” he noted.
He further stated that Ghanaians expect of the government to build on what the previous government has started and Ghanaians are yearning to see the fruits of the current government, which is 17 months old.
“The least President Akufo-Addo must do is to add to his predecessor’s significant gains instead of rolling back the clock of socio-economic transformation. After seventeen months in office, what the people want to see are the projects initiated or started by the President since he was sworn into office.”
He went on to list some roads that were constructed and fixed under the NDC government as well as investments in health, education, rural electrification, water among others all in the Brong Ahafo Region.
John Mahama, therefore, advised the president to use the opportunity offered by his tour to explain to the people of Ghana why the NPP government has not been able to fulfill its campaign promises.
“Even as we remain convinced that an unwholesome political motive may have informed the President feigning ignorance, we wish to encourage him to use the opportunity offered by these tours, to explain to the people of Ghana why they should continue to repose confidence in him after having disappointed them through his failure to honour many campaign promises.”
