A retired military officer, Retired. Capt. Joel Sowu, has underscored the need for the Ghana Police to educate its junior rank officers in particular, on military protocols in order to avoid the seeming friction between the two security agencies.
He argued there would be a show of respect if all the protocols in an inter security agency operations are followed, something he noted would eventually prevent conflicts between the police and the military.
Speaking on Onua FM Monday, he observed that there has been a long-standing conflict between the police and the military, hence was not surprising to hear news of the clash between the military and police in Tamale.
A group of soldiers who were said to have been angered by the arrest of one of their men as a suspect in a case, stormed the Regional Police headquarters in Tamale Wednesday and opened fire on police officers injuring seven of them.

Some police personnel who were on guard duties at various points in the metropolis sited by the soldiers on their way to the regional police headquarters were also allegedly attacked by the angry military men.
Speaking to Bright Kwasi Asempa on Onua FM’s Yen Nsempa, Retired. Capt. Sowu said the clash could have been avoided if due protocols were followed.
He said the Police in Tamale should have reported the matter to its High Command. The Police High Command, he said, would in turn request the Military High Command to produce the soldier (suspect).
“There are protocols to follow. In the military, apart from the Constitution of Ghana which is the Supreme Court of Law, the Ghana Arm Forces also has its Arm Forces Act and Arm Forces Regulations that regulates the conduct of officers and men in the Ghana Arm Forces as well as the military police and investigation unit of the military police”, he explained.
In his view, no soldier would want to see his colleague being manhandled, as was reported as the case in the Tamale incident, hence the reaction of the group of soldiers.
He described the conduct of the police in such instances as disrespect to the military.
