Renowned Belgium-based Ghanaian highlife musician Harry Abban has said that it’s time Ghanaian musicians began to fuse the Queen’s language into their songs to gain more recognition across the globe.
He suggests that singing should not be done in only the local dialect.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Onua 95.1 FM, Harry Abban told the host of Anigye Mmre that, “In Europe now, Nigerian music is played across most radio stations than Ghanaian music.
“I hardly hear Ghanaian music being played because [Nigerians] are singing in pidgin English and people can understand their lyrics better.”
The ‘Maye Krado’ hit maker further stated that: “Ghanaian musicians mostly sing in Twi.
“Foreigners may like our songs, but if they can understand the lyrics of our songs it will really help. We have big guys like Lumba, Kojo Antwi, Amakye Dede etc…these are big guys in Ghana.
“Why are their songs not there and I can tell you the language really matters sometimes no doubt about it.”
When host Christian Agyei Frimpong inquired from Harry Abban if some of the artistes making waves in Ghana now are also enjoying massive airplay in Europe, he simply said “No, I haven’t heard any of their songs but with the Nigerian artiste. [Yes]”.
