2027 AFCON qualifiers: Competition for places in Black Stars good â?? Kwasi Sibo

Kwasi Sibo believes increased competition for places in the Black Stars will benefit Ghana as Carlos Queiroz begins his tenure with the team.

The midfielder was speaking after seven players reported for Ghana’s opening training session at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Ghana will face Côte d’Ivoire in their opening Group C fixture at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké before returning to Accra to host Gambia in their second match.

Sibo says having quality players competing for positions will raise standards within the squad and encourage everyone to perform at their best.

The Black Stars are beginning a new chapter under Queiroz following their participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Portuguese coach expected to make changes as he builds his team.

Competition for places could become particularly important as players seek to establish themselves under the new technical team.

“We need to be competitive every time in the team. If we have players who play in the same position, it is very good for everyone because we push ourselves to give our best for the nation,” Sibo said.

Ghana will have to cope without Mohammed Kudus for the Côte d’Ivoire encounter after the midfielder was ruled out with an injury.

His absence has prompted the late inclusion of Mohammed Fuseini, giving Queiroz another attacking option.
