Alexander Djiku impresses for Spartak ahead of expected Ghana recall

Alexander Djiku continued his strong run of form for Spartak Moscow with another solid performance in their 1-0 victory over Fakel Voronezh in the Russian Premier League on Wednesday.

The Ghanaian defender started and played the full 90 minutes, helping Spartak secure a clean sheet at the Lukoil Arena. Manfred Ugalde scored the decisive goal in stoppage time to seal all three points.

Djiku was influential throughout the encounter, recording 110 touches and making 10 recoveries while winning three duels. He also attempted two shots, including one effort that was saved in the first half.

The 32-year-old has now completed three consecutive 90-minute appearances for Spartak, underlining his return to regular football after an injury setback.

Djiku missed Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign because of an injury suffered in Spartak’s Russian Cup final, but his recent performances have strengthened his prospects of returning to the Black Stars.

He is expected to receive a recall from head coach Carlos Queiroz for Ghana’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.

Djiku’s return would provide the Black Stars with an experienced defensive option as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
