Ghana new coach Carlos Queiroz says home-based players have the potential to earn places in the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.
The former assistant coach of Real Madrid and Manchester United has been appointed to replace Otto Addo, taking charge of the Black Stars following a disappointing run of results in recent international friendlies against Austria and Germany.
Ghana, one of Africa’s traditional football powerhouses, are now preparing for the global showpiece set to be staged in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with expectations high for a strong showing on the world stage.
In recent years, players operating in the domestic league have struggled to break into the national team setup, with Hearts of Oak captain Benjamin Asare among the few home-based players to earn consistent call-ups.
Speaking after his unveiling at the Alissa Hotel, Queiroz delivered a strong message of encouragement to local players, stressing that talent in the domestic league will be closely assessed for potential World Cup inclusion.
“I have no problem with egos. We need them â that’s why these players are in the national team. My job is to ensure those egos are channeled into the service of the team. That is my responsibility. I believe there are several players in the local league with the potential to earn a spot in the World Cup squad,” he said.
The 73-year-old arrives with one of the most extensive coaching résumés in international football, having managed several national teams including Portugal national football team, Iran national football team, Egypt national football team, Japan national football team, Qatar national football team, and Oman national football team.
Queiroz also brings vast World Cup experience, having helped South Africa qualify for 2002, guided Portugal to the Round of 16 in 2010, and led Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 editions.
Ghana will now look to benefit from that experience as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto before facing England and Croatia in a challenging group stage.
