Retired FIFA referee William Agbovi has described the Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak clash as the biggest stage for referees to prove themselves and grow their careers.
According to Agbovi, handling Ghana’s most famous rivalry brings massive attention and can help officials rise quickly in the game. With fans watching both locally and abroad, he believes every referee sees the fixture as a rare opportunity.
Reflecting on his own journey, Agbovi revealed that he officiated the KotokoâHearts fixture nine times before retiring. He explained how those matches helped shape his career and increase his visibility.
"Everytime it will come up when I get to know the referee for the game I call them. I have handled Kotoko and Hearts of Oak games nine times before going on retirement when I got into Premier I think that was my second match after Kotoko vs Olympics top four 2002," as aired by Peace FM.
"My second match was Kotoko vs Hearts in Kumasi top four 2002, my last match president cup that one too Kumasi then I went on retirement. Nine times Kotoko hearts everyday I say that Kotoko Hearts it is a platform that lifts you the referee it is a very huge platform because everybody is watching that match both local and international. That is where you make your name famous that is where you are pushed."
