A web connection these days isn’t a luxury. It’s actually a necessity because is there anything we don’t need the internet for in 2024? Unfortunately, a stable or speedy connection isn’t always a guarantee.
It wouldn’t be much of a problem if your router decides to ghost you while you’re doing something trivial, such as catching up on posts on your LinkedIn feed. On the contrary, it’s always during the important stuff, like a Zoom meeting with your project manager, video calling loved ones in far flung places or in the middle of a live casino session, that these things happen.
Before you toss the router out the window out of frustration, there might be a few tweaks that can enhance your connection. Below are some suggestions to try out to improve your home’s internet speed:
Upgrade the Router’s Firmware
Everyone seems to know why we should run software updates on our devices. But, for some reason, few of us actually do it. If you’re like most people, I’m guessing you can’t remember the last time you updated your router.
This neglect might be the reason behind the slow connection. Firmware updates aren’t only about the latest security patches. They can also improve performance. Log into your router’s web interface from your PC’s browser and check if it’s running the latest update.
If it’s not, click that update button without hesitation. I would also recommend enabling automatic upgrades so the device always has the latest version when it’s available.
Reduce Connected Devices
Too many devices connected to your router can eat up bandwidth, leaving you with not enough resources to stream TV shows on Netflix. So, why not cut things down a bit? Disconnect any device you’re not using from your Wi-Fi network to free up bandwidth.
You should also check if anyone has sneaked into your network. It’s possible you forgot to set up a Wi-Fi password, so you have intruders sharing your connection. Kick your greedy neighbours out of the network, and create a secure password to ensure they stay out.
Change Your Router’s Position
Remember how we used to move around the house to find the best speed for our mobile phone’s internet connection? Well, that old-school trick still works for Wi-Fi routers.
Shift your router to a central position in your home to enable the signal to travel evenly across the rooms. It’ll also help if you elevate the device and ensure it’s not blocked by walls or any other obstruction.
You might want to also keep it away from any electronic devices that can cause an interference with the connection. Finally, move your devices closer to the router to improve the signal strength.
Consider an Ethernet Cable
I know, I know! It’s 2024, and everything should be wireless. But an Ethernet Cable connects your PC directly to the router, leading to a more stable and faster connection, which is great if you’re doing something heavy like gaming.
I’m guessing you’re probably wondering how you’ll move about with the device if it’s hooked to the router with a wire. But I would argue your convenience for a couple of hours is a worthwhile sacrifice to make if you want to enjoy Call of Duty with your pals.
Restart the Router
This is another old-school solution that could help improve your internet connection at home. We do it with all our digital devices, and routers are no different. Restarting your router can give it a much-needed refresh and clear any cache backlog slowing down the performance.
Wrapping Up
In 2024, a slow internet connection can feel like a national emergency, especially in the middle of an office meeting. Fortunately, it’s something you can fix with a few simple steps. Upgrading your router’s firmware, using an ethernet cable, or simply changing the device’s location can work wonders for your connection.
