Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the closure of the Bonsa Headworks, which provides 75% of potable water to the Tarkwa-Nsueam Municipality in the Western Region.
The shutdown, effective immediately, is due to the severe pollution caused by illegal mining activities, known as galamsey, on the Bonsa River, making it impossible to extract and treat water for distribution.
In a statement released on January 2, 2025, and signed by the Tarkwa District Manager of GWL, Wisdom Doe Akoto, the company explained that despite numerous efforts to combat the pollution caused by galamsey, these have proven ineffective. As a result, the decision was made to suspend operations at the Bonsa facility.
The pollution from galamsey activities has made it impossible to continue operations. We have tried all possible measures, but to no avail, hence the shutdown.
The river is still being monitored to determine when its quality will meet the necessary standards for resumption of operations. Until then, the plant will remain closed.
GWL has called on local authorities, security agencies, and other stakeholders to take immediate action to address the ongoing pollution and restore the river’s quality. This closure is expected to have a significant impact on the water supply for both residents and industries in the Tarkwa-Nsueam Municipality.
The company has promised to keep the public updated on any developments regarding the situation and the potential for restarting production. The closure serves as a stark reminder of the devastating effects of illegal mining on the environment and essential resources.
