Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Gladson Awako has claimed that his growing influence and leadership at the club led to his exit.
Awako, who joined the Phobians in 2021, departed in September 2023 after winning one Ghana Premier League title and two FA Cup trophies with the team.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, the 33-year-old revealed that internal politics at the club played a significant role in his departure.
Hearts of Oak and Olympics are two different clubs. One of the clubs is political, and the other is not. It got to a point where they thought I was becoming too powerful, so they had to get rid of me, but there was no personal issue with me
He also highlighted the leadership roles handed to him by former coach Slavko Mati?, which contributed to his influence within the club.
The leadership roles I got from the coach gave me power, and they felt if they allowed me to continue, it wouldn’t help some of them. So, they decided to let me go
After leaving Hearts of Oak, Awako has returned to Accra Great Olympics, now competing in the Division One League after their relegation. The former captain aims to help his team secure promotion back to the Ghana Premier League.
Hearts of Oak’s upcoming match
Following their loss to Asante Kotoko in the Super Clash, Accra Hearts of Oak will be looking to bounce back as they face Berekum Chelsea in their next Ghana Premier League fixture. The Phobians will aim to return to winning ways and improve their league standings.
