The Government of Ghana has confirmed the rescue of 44 of its nationals from a suspected human trafficking and fraudulent recruitment network operating in Nigeria, in a development that underscores growing regional concerns over transnational scam operations.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration via its official X (formerly Twitter) platform, the victims were lured into the scheme through deceptive online and informal recruitment channels, with promises of lucrative employment and international travel opportunities.
However, upon arrival in Nigeria, the individuals reportedly faced harsh and exploitative conditions, including restricted freedom of movement, psychological manipulation, and coercion to recruit others into the network — a pattern authorities say is consistent with the operations of controversial entities such as QNET.
The rescue followed a coordinated security operation conducted on March 16 by Nigerian authorities, led by the Department of State Services, in collaboration with Ghanaian counterparts. The victims were subsequently repatriated to Accra on March 20.
In a show of strengthening bilateral security cooperation, Accra expressed “sincere appreciation” to the Government of Nigeria for its swift intervention, highlighting the importance of cross-border intelligence sharing in tackling organised crime within the sub-region.
Officials say both governments are now intensifying efforts to dismantle the criminal syndicates behind such operations, while prioritising the rehabilitation and reintegration of the rescued individuals.
The latest incident has reignited warnings from the Foreign Ministry over the rising sophistication of fraudulent recruitment networks targeting vulnerable youth across West Africa. Authorities are urging the public to verify travel and employment offers through official channels and avoid engagement with unverified agents.
Reaffirming its diplomatic and consular mandate, the Government stressed its continued commitment to protecting Ghanaian citizens abroad and combating human trafficking in all its forms — a challenge increasingly requiring coordinated regional and international response mechanisms.
