Black Queens forward Princess Marfo says Ghana’s togetherness was crucial to their 2-1 comeback victory over Côte d’Ivoire in the WAFCON 2026 play-in, which kept their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup alive.
Ghana fell behind after just four minutes when Ines Konan converted from the penalty spot after Marfo was adjudged to have fouled her marker inside the box.
Despite the setback, the Black Queens remained composed and gradually took control of the contest, creating several opportunities without finding the equaliser before half-time.
The breakthrough eventually came after the restart when Marfo rose highest to head home from Stella Nyamekye’s corner, restoring parity for Ghana.
Josephine Bonsu then completed the comeback from the penalty spot 13 minutes later after Ghana were awarded a penalty for handball.
Marfo believes the players’ ability to remain united and follow their game plan helped them overcome the difficult circumstances.
“We came to work as a team because we had everything to lose and everything to gain. We just stuck to the game plan, and individual qualities also played a part.”
The forward also praised the support and encouragement around the team as Ghana held on for the win.
“We kept going, and we kept getting the support and encouragement, and we kept making Ghana and ourselves proud.”
The victory secured Ghana one of Africa’s two places in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Play-Off Tournament, alongside South Africa, who defeated Nigeria 2-1.
