The Ghana Black Starlets have been drawn into a challenging Group D for the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to be held in Morocco from May 13 to June 2.
Following the official draw ceremony conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo on Wednesday, Ghana finds itself alongside continental heavyweights Senegal, South Africa, and Algeria.
Widely regarded as the âGroup of Death,’ Group D presents a formidable hurdle for the Starlets as they seek to reclaim their former glory on the youth stage.
Senegal enters the tournament as a perennial powerhouse, while South Africa and Algeria bring tactical discipline and high-level technical ability, making every match in the cluster a high-stakes encounter.
Ghana is back in the tournament for the first time since 2017.
The tournament serves as the qualifier for the 2026 U17 World Cup. The top two teams from each group qualify for the knockout stage and the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
Additionally, third-placed teams will compete in playoffs for the remaining two World Cup spots.
For Ghana, the objective remains clear: navigating a tough group stage is the first step toward securing a World Cup return.
