The Ghana Police Service has given authorities of Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) a 24-hour ultimatum to produce students alleged to have been involved in violence that disrupted the District Schools Athletics Games at Agona Swedru.
The directive was issued by the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department, COP Lydia Yarkor Donkor, during a meeting with the school’s headmaster, Justice Kojo Frimpong, on February 23, as investigations continue into the incident that overshadowed what was meant to be a celebration of youth sport.
The disturbance occurred during the inter-school athletics competition on February 19, when tensions escalated between students of Obrachire Senior High Technical School and SWESBUS. Eyewitnesses said one student was attacked during the confrontation, forcing organisers and bystanders to intervene and restore calm before the injured athlete was taken for medical attention.
Police say the actions captured on widely circulated videos go beyond school indiscipline and have stressed the need for accountability to protect the integrity of school sports competitions.
The Ghana Police Service has since confirmed it is investigating the matter and condemned the violence, assuring the public that those responsible will be identified and dealt with in accordance with the law.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about safety and discipline at inter-school sporting events, which are regarded as key platforms for nurturing young talent and promoting fair play.
