Some of the irate youth. INSET: The deceased
DAILY GUIDE has gathered that the youth in Wassa Akropong, in the Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region, clashed with police personnel in the area over the weekend.
What triggered the nasty incident, according to some residents, was an alleged shooting incident by the police which purportedly led to the death of an indigene.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that police personnel at Wassa Akropong, on Thursday, at about 8pm, shot at a man identified only as Kwofie when they were on their usual evening patrol within the town.
The police, who were said to be on high alert due to recent robbery cases in Wassa Akropong, allegedly shot the man after they suspected him to be carrying substance believed to be Indian hemp.
It was alleged that the victim, after sighting the police, began running and in an attempt to catch up with him, the police shot at his waist.
The alleged suspect sustained injuries and was later rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately died on Sunday, February 25, 2024.
Information gathered indicated that when the news of the death of Kwofie reached the youth, they stormed the police station in their numbers and started destroying some items, as well as pelting the police officers around with stones and other dangerous items.
“This made the police call for reinforcement from Tarkwa-Nsuaem, who allegedly used brute force to calm the situation, and even shot some of the irate youth with rubber bullets,” a resident narrated.
The Municipal Chief Executive of the Amenfi East Municipality, Frederick Korankye, indicated the police in the area have decided to intensify their evening patrols in the area due to the recent robbery cases.
He said the incidents that happened last Thursday and over the weekend were unfortunate, adding, “Calm has now been restored.”
